My first check is simple: what comes out of your source? A headphone amp makes an analog signal stronger. A DAC turns digital audio into that analog signal. Some boxes do both. An amp with no DAC can't take sound straight from a USB port.
I'd spend on the right connections before chasing more power. None of these boxes fixes a poor fit or a sound you dislike. Start with the headphones that suit your music and room, then fill the gap in your setup.
1. JDS Labs Atom Amp 2: my desk amp pick
The Atom Amp 2 is my pick if you already have a DAC or a clean analog output. It costs $129 on JDS Labs' US site at the time of writing. You get a metal case, a large volume knob, two gain levels, and a choice of RCA or 3.5 mm input.
I like the clear job it does. Plug in a source, pick low gain to start, and set the level by ear. There's no screen full of sound filters to work through. That makes it a good fit for a desk where the music is the point.
One detail is easy to miss: its 6.35 mm and 4.4 mm headphone jacks are both single-ended. The shape of a socket doesn't prove that an amp is balanced. Buy the plug you need, not a label you think you need.
The catch: this is an amp, not a USB DAC. Also, its RCA preamp output mutes when you use the 6.35 mm jack, but not the 4.4 mm jack. That matters if powered speakers share the desk. Switch them off when you want private listening through that smaller socket.
In a discussion of the Atom and K11, one owner of both Atom generations preferred the Amp 2. Another liked how little fuss the Atom setup took. Those are individual reports, but the appeal makes sense: fewer settings can be a feature.
2. Qudelix-5K: best for EQ and travel
The Qudelix-5K is the one I'd choose to keep wired headphones in use away from a desk. Your phone sends sound to this small receiver by Bluetooth. Your headphones still plug into it with a wire. It also works as a USB DAC.
Its real draw is EQ, short for equalizer. You can raise or lower parts of the sound, such as bass or sharp high notes. The 20-band controls go far beyond a simple bass switch. Save a sound you like, then leave it alone.
The $109 US listing specifies a 3.5 mm output and a 2.5 mm balanced output. There's no 4.4 mm jack. Check your cable before you buy. The quoted battery range is six to 20 hours, not a promise of 20 hours with every headphone and setting.
The catch: this is a small device with a lot of controls in its app. I'd choose it for someone who wants to adjust the sound. For a person who just wants a large knob on the desk, the Atom is a better fit.
The Qudelix user manual is worth keeping nearby for the first setup. Start with modest EQ changes. If you boost bass, lower the preamp level in the EQ controls to leave room for that boost.
3. iFi ZEN DAC 3: a simple USB DAC and amp
I'd pick the ZEN DAC 3 for a computer-based music setup that needs both a DAC and a headphone amp. USB-C carries sound and power, so one cable can handle the link to your computer.
The front has 6.35 mm and balanced 4.4 mm headphone outputs. PowerMatch changes the gain. XBass+ adds a bass lift without asking you to build an EQ curve. That's useful if you want a quick choice between two sounds.
There are also RCA and 4.4 mm line outputs on the rear. Those feed other audio gear. They aren't extra headphone jacks. A fixed or variable switch lets you choose whether the volume control sets the line-output level.
The catch: its digital input is USB. It isn't the pick for an optical cable from a TV. A separate 5 V supply is supported but isn't included. I'd try normal USB power first, then solve a real power issue if one comes up.
This is the tidier choice if you don't already own a DAC. The Atom makes more sense when that part of the job is already covered.
4. Schiit Magni Unity: choose the DAC you need
The Magni Unity starts at $119 as an analog amp on the current US listing. The built-in Mesh DAC costs extra. With that DAC fitted, USB-C can carry music from your computer. Without it, you need an analog source.
That choice is the reason I'd buy it. You can keep a DAC you like or get a small DAC/amp in one case. Just check the exact order before paying. Older reviews may show an earlier DAC card.
There's one 6.35 mm headphone jack. Three gain settings give you room to match the volume range to your headphones. The lowest setting reduces gain, which can help keep the knob useful with easy-to-drive pairs.
The catch: there's no balanced headphone output. Its power supply is an AC wall transformer, too. Use the supplied unit; an ordinary DC adapter isn't a substitute.
The RCA preamp output mutes when headphones are plugged in. That's handy for a desk with powered speakers. I'd choose the Atom for its two analog inputs. The Magni makes sense when the built-in DAC saves space.
5. FiiO K11: useful when you have several sources
The original FiiO K11 is worth a look if you need USB, optical, and coaxial inputs in one desktop DAC/amp. It has a display, three gain levels, and both 6.35 mm and balanced 4.4 mm headphone outputs.
It's a mains-powered box, not a portable amp. The 12 V supply belongs on the desk. I'd choose it for a desk with more than one digital source. A computer and a device with optical output could share it.
The original K11 uses a CS43198 DAC. Check the full model name on the seller's page because similarly named versions are separate products. The original black K11 was listed in stock at authorized US seller B&H for $142.99 when I checked.
The catch: FiiO documents a pop sound with filter 6 when music pauses. If that affects your setup, use another filter. I wouldn't choose a filter based on its name or the promise of a special sound.
For a new US buyer with just one computer, I favor the simpler choices above. The K11 earns its place when those extra digital inputs serve a real need.
How much power do you need?
More isn't always better. If your current source plays cleanly at the level you need, an amp may add little. Buy one when the volume runs out, the source struggles, or you need better controls and connections.
Two headphone specs matter here. Impedance, shown in ohms, describes the electrical load. Sensitivity tells you how much sound the headphones make from a stated input. You need both. A low ohm number alone doesn't mean a pair is easy to drive.
Power figures also need a load and an output jack attached to them. A claim made at 32 ohms through a balanced output is specific. It doesn't tell you the power at 300 ohms through another jack. Compare like with like.
Gain changes how much the amp raises the signal. Start low. Use a higher setting only if you can't reach a sensible level. It isn't a sound-quality mode, and a high setting isn't a badge of better headphones.
Check the whole chain before you buy
For a USB DAC/amp, the chain is simple: computer, USB cable, DAC/amp, headphones. For an analog-only amp, a DAC or another analog source goes before the amp.

Balanced output isn't a promise of better sound. It may provide more power on a given amp, but the headphone cable must be wired for it. Don't use a simple adapter to turn an ordinary shared-ground headphone cable into a balanced one.
For powered speakers, use the line or preamp output that the maker specifies. A headphone socket and a line socket can look alike while serving different jobs.
Headphone amplifier, DAC/amp, or audio interface?

A headphone amplifier makes the analog signal stronger
An analog headphone amplifier takes sound that has already been turned into an electrical audio signal. It supplies the voltage and current your headphones need. The volume knob controls the listening level.
The Atom Amp 2 and the base Magni Unity are headphone amplifiers of this type. Their analog inputs need an analog source. A computer's headphone output can serve as one, but a USB port can't do that job on its own.
I'd buy this type if my source was clean but short on power. A knob within reach is another reason to choose it. I wouldn't add a separate headphone amplifier just because there was an empty space beside the computer.
A DAC/amp puts two jobs in one box
A DAC handles digital conversion. It turns the numbers in a music file into an analog signal. The headphone amplifier then makes that signal strong enough to drive headphones. A DAC/amp combines those stages.
The ZEN DAC 3, K11, and Qudelix-5K do both jobs. So does a Magni Unity ordered with its DAC card. For a new computer setup, a DAC/amp can save a cable, a power socket, and some desk space.
Check which digital inputs it has. The ZEN uses USB. The K11 adds optical inputs and coaxial support for other sources. A versatile headphone amplifier is useful only if its extra connections match gear you own.
An audio interface adds recording tools
An audio interface can connect microphones or instruments to a computer. Many also have a DAC and a headphone amplifier for monitoring. If you record music or spoken audio, those inputs may matter more than another music-only box.
If you already use an interface, try its headphone output first. A separate headphone amplifier may help with demanding headphones, but don't assume you need one. It adds another level control and another cable to manage.
How I'd compare power claims
I start with the headphones, then look at the amplifier. Full size headphones aren't always harder to drive than small ones. Size doesn't set the power requirements. Impedance and sensitivity are the more useful clues.
High impedance needs enough voltage
High impedance headphones can need more voltage to reach a given level. A spec such as 300 ohms is one part of that picture. It doesn't tell you how loud the headphones will play by itself.
For high impedance headphones, I'd look for the amp's output at a similar load. A headline power figure for 32 ohms isn't the full answer. The best headphone amplifiers publish figures that let you make a fair match.
Low sensitivity needs care too
Low sensitivity means the headphones make less sound from the stated input. A pair can have low impedance and still need more power than a small source can give. That's why two different headphones with the same ohm number can behave quite differently.
Check how sensitivity is stated. A figure based on one milliwatt and a figure based on one volt aren't directly interchangeable. Keep the units with the number when you compare them or ask a maker for help.
Leave enough headroom for peaks
Music has short peaks above its average level. Enough headroom lets a headphone amplifier handle those peaks without running out of clean output. It's spare room, not an invitation to listen louder.
There's no single watt figure that every buyer needs. The right margin depends on the headphones, the source level, the music, and any EQ cuts. I'd seek enough power for the pair I own before paying for power I may never use.
Gain isn't the same as maximum power
A gain switch changes how far the amplifier raises the input signal. High gain can make the same knob position louder. It doesn't turn that position into a higher-quality listening mode.
Start at low gain with the volume turned down. Use a setting that gives you useful movement of the knob. If the sound jumps from too quiet to too loud in a tiny turn, more gain is the wrong direction.
What clean sound means in practice
A plain headphone amplifier should pass the music through cleanly. I don't want added hiss or an unwanted change in tone. A claim of better sound quality needs more context than a large price tag.
Noise floor and sensitive IEMs
The noise floor is the quiet background noise of the system. Sensitive IEMs, the small headphones that fit in your ears, can make that hiss easier to hear. An amplifier built for lots of power isn't automatically the best match for them.
I'd check low-gain behavior and listen with playback paused at a normal setting. Don't turn an amp to full volume just to hunt for noise you'd never hear in use. Compare the conditions you actually plan to use.
Hiss, hum, and crackle can have different causes. A loose plug, noisy source, cable, or power issue may be involved. Swap one part at a time before deciding that the headphone amplifier is at fault.
Dynamic range and distortion
Dynamic range describes the span between the noise floor and a stated upper signal limit. More range on a spec sheet can be useful, but the measurement conditions matter. It doesn't mean the recording itself gains more range.
Total harmonic distortion describes added tones related to the original signal. THD+N includes noise as well. Compare figures at similar loads and output levels. A number measured just below clipping answers a different question from one measured at a modest level.
I'd use these figures to spot limits, not to promise an audible gain from each extra zero. Once an amplifier has enough clean output, comfort and headphone tuning can make a much larger difference to listening pleasure.
Frequency response and tone
Frequency response shows how level changes across low and high frequencies. A neutral headphone amplifier should have a fairly even response. Check it across the useful audio range with the intended load.
A wide frequency range by itself isn't a sound-quality verdict. A bass switch or EQ can change the balance on purpose. That can be enjoyable, but keep that choice separate from claims that a plain amplifier adds detail to every track.
Should your first headphone amp use tubes?
For a first setup, I favor a straightforward solid-state headphone amplifier like the desk picks above. A tube amp may appeal for its design or sound. The word tube doesn't describe one fixed result.
The circuit, its output impedance, and the headphones all affect what you hear. Don't assume every tube amp sounds warm or suits every load. High impedance headphones and low impedance headphones can interact differently with the same output.
A tube amp can also add heat, space needs, and parts to maintain. I'd choose one for a clear reason after checking the maker's load guidance. It isn't a required step toward serious music listening.
Three setups I'd build from this list
A desk with an existing DAC
I'd connect the DAC's line outputs to the Atom's RCA inputs. Then I'd plug the headphones into the front and start on low gain. This is the simplest case for a separate headphone amplifier.
If the source only has a 3.5 mm analog output, the Atom accepts that too. Check the source's level guidance and keep both devices out of clipping. Two analog inputs are handy if you switch between sources, but they don't mix them together.
A computer with no headphone jack
I'd use a USB DAC/amp. The ZEN DAC 3 is my neat one-box choice; a Magni with its DAC fitted is another route. The K11 earns its extra controls when optical or coaxial sources share the desk.
Check the cable has the right plugs and carries data. A charging-only cable can supply power while leaving the computer unable to send audio. In the computer's sound settings, select the DAC/amp as the playback device.
A phone with wired headphones
I'd choose the Qudelix-5K when Bluetooth and EQ are the point. It lets the phone stay free of a headphone cable while the small receiver handles the wired connection to your headphones.
For USB use, check the phone's support and cable needs first. Battery use, charging behavior, and supported formats can differ from a desktop connection. A portable DAC/amp should make the bag easier to live with, not fill it with adapters.
Compare the price of a working setup
A low amplifier price can hide a missing DAC or cable. A higher DAC/amp price may include those jobs. I'd compare the total cost at checkout, with the exact version and all needed parts.
The Magni's base price is for the analog headphone amplifier. The DAC card changes that total. The Atom price also needs a source beside it. For the ZEN DAC 3, normal USB power is a route to try before adding its separate supply.
Leave room for return shipping and a suitable cable if your headphones use a different plug. A balanced cable can add cost, and the jack doesn't guarantee better audio performance. Buy it only if the output serves a real need.
The best headphone amps solve a limit you can name. For me, that might be more useful volume control, enough clean power, or a missing input. If your current gear already does the job, keeping it is a valid choice.
The last checks I'd make on headphone amps
Read signal-to-noise ratio with the test level
Signal-to-noise ratio, or SNR, compares a stated signal level with background noise. A larger positive number means a bigger gap under those test conditions. Headphone amps should be compared at similar levels and loads.
A figure measured near full output can look great while saying little about quiet listening. For small, sensitive headphones, I'd also look at the noise level itself. The best headphone amps stay useful at the level you actually hear.
Don't match two ohm numbers as if they must be equal
The output impedance of a headphone amp and the impedance of the headphones describe different things. For a neutral setup, the amp's output impedance is usually much lower. It isn't a number you should try to match exactly.
A low output impedance helps limit changes in tone as the headphone load varies with frequency. Follow the maker's guidance for the lowest supported load. Demanding headphones need a suitable match, but price alone doesn't tell you whether a match is good.
Decide whether you want sound effects
Some headphone amps offer crossfeed. It blends part of each stereo channel into the other, often with filtering or delay. This can make hard left-right recordings feel less split between your ears. It's a taste choice, not proof of better detail.
EQ changes the level of parts of the frequency range. Crossfeed changes the relation between the channels. They do different jobs. Music lovers who want to shape the sound may value these controls more than another jump in power.

Put the form factor on the desk
Cut a piece of paper to the case size and set it where the device will go. Leave room behind it for plugs and in front for your hand. A desktop headphone amp needs usable space, not just a spot that fits its case.
For portable headphone amps, count the phone, cables, and receiver together. A small device can still make an awkward stack. I'd choose the Qudelix for a bag and keep the mains-powered headphone amps at a fixed desk.
Check what a new DAC actually replaces
A laptop already has a DAC if it offers an analog headphone jack. An external DAC/amp replaces that path when you choose it as the audio output. Adding a new DAC isn't required just because the existing one is inside a computer.
With a USB-C laptop, confirm the device supports USB audio and that you have the right data cable. For a TV or console, check the supported input format as well as the socket. An optical socket alone doesn't promise that every surround format will play.
Compare the affordable price with the useful features
The best budget choice can be an analog amp if the source is already covered. A DAC headphone amplifier can be better value for a laptop that needs both jobs. I'd write the full price of each working setup beside the features I'll use.
The K11 is my best budget pick here for several digital sources. The Atom is a good fit for a clean analog source and a simple desk. Those are different jobs at different total prices, so I wouldn't choose only by the cheapest box.
A few questions before checkout
Will an amp make Bluetooth headphones sound better?
Not through Bluetooth. Wireless headphones already have a DAC and amp inside. An external headphone amp is for a wired signal path. Even with a cable, active headphones may still use their own sound processing.
Do I need a separate DAC and amp?
No. A combined unit is often the neatest answer. Separate boxes make sense when you own one part already or need inputs that a combined model lacks. More boxes don't prove better sound.
